Male Psychosexual Development in 7 Korean Films between 2003 and 2004
Yoo Hee-Jeong

Abstract
This article is a short review of seven films presented in 2003-3004 in Korea, from the perspective of the male psychosexual development and its derivatives. Recently, rapid increase in the number of films that depict the male psychosexual development, especially concentrated in infantile genital phase and adolescent years, has been a characteristic of Korean movies. 1) Untold Scandal (2003) shows phallic narcissism in the early infantile genital phase in male psychosexual development and castration anxiety over a prohibited sexual relationship. 2) Spider Forest (2004) describes the primitive fantasy of a primal scene and sexual and aggressive drives in male Oedipal conflicts. 3) TaeGukGi: Brotherhood of War (2003) and Superstar Mr. Gam (2004) depict the role of a father substitute and the issue of personal development in the enmeshed family. 4) The Scarlet Letter (2004) emphasizes the manifestations of the internalized superego and guilt associated with castration anxiety. 5) Spirit of Jeet Keun Do (2004) describes revival of the Oedipus complex and disengagement from the primary love object in adolescence alongside identification with the super hero. The President¡¯s Barber (2004) also shows the process of deidealization and disillusionment of and understanding for the father throughout the generations. These movies may reflect the aspects of repetition compulsion of modern Korean history and the unconsciousness of the Korean public.
